"Stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage." Nor this only. It is the law of Christ. These other words are defining what the agape love actually is. And God held the reins that the truth might be kept unsullied and pure; and he goes south and north as the Lord guided His servant, but not to Jerusalem to those that were apostles before him. You can't do anything to buy redemption. The meaning is that you never can get stability in blessing until you have simply God putting forth His own power according to His own grace. The whole legal institution depended on a people lineally descended from Abraham, as their priests on a similar succession from Aaron. If therefore we would make it appear that we do indeed belong to Christ, this must be our sincere care and endeavour as well as the other; and that it was the design of the apostle to represent both the one and the other of these as our duty, and as necessary to support our character as Christians, may be gathered from what follows (Galatians 5:25; Galatians 5:25), where he adds, If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit; that is, "If we profess to have received the Spirit of Christ, or that we are renewed in the Spirit of Christ, or that we are renewed in the spirit of our minds, and endued with a principle of spiritual life, let us make it appear by the proper fruits of the Spirit in our lives." And this is always true in its measure, and shows the exceeding gravity of opposition where God raises up for His own special work in this world; but more particularly where, as in the apostle's case, the mere manner of his conversion, the special form of his separation unto God, bears the impress of the truth he was to preach. It was therefore not only for him, but for the instruction of the Galatians, and of us all. When God gives a pledge not of possessing the gate of enemies, when He speaks of the blessing of the nations, instead of the overthrow of Israel's foes, then he speaks simply of "thy seed." Don't be entangled again with rules, regulations, a yoke of bondage. 2. Thus, then, God directed and ruled that the apostle should go up and have the evil condemned on the spot, and at the centre from which it had emanated. As for himself, he gloried only in the cross. Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams; for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul. Therefore law, sin, and death may not hurt you or drive you to despair. Interesting to me that heresies is here mentioned as a part of the works of the flesh. How impossible, therefore, to add the law to the promise! The Holy Ghost is given as the seal of faith in Christ on the accomplishment of redemption, not before nor otherwise. It is the liberty not to do those things which the flesh once forced me to do. They are ideas that have been planted in your mind by men. This is the constitution of your priceless liberty. And people to follow after me, you know. You cannot lawfully add to it, any more than set aside its provisions. Christian baptism, contrariwise, supposes man dead; and the only death that can deliver man out of his own death is the death of Christ. It describes the deliberate effort--which we can make only with the help of God--never to seek anything but the best even for those who seek the worst for us. This epistle, as those to the Corinthians, opens with an assertion of his apostolic place. This therefore the apostle would have us by all means to watch against. Here he comes to the positive blessing; for the Spirit cannot rest in what is but negative. Paul went on to argue that if you accepted circumcision, that is to say, if you accepted one part of the law, logically you had to accept the whole law. All therefore becomes a matter of the pure grace of God; and He is pleased to bless the Gentiles in the Seed, even Christ dead and risen. And it is in the realm of the spirit where man meets God.
